Wednesday Woes: The Mayhem fall in Fayetteville

The Mayhem drop their midweek contest in Fayetteville by a score of 5-1. After the opening puck dropped, the first period went the same way we’ve seen so many games start for the Mayhem this season. A flurry of back-and-forth play through the first ten minutes resulted in some good scoring chances for both sides but no points on the board. The Marksmen broke the deadlock a little over halfway through the opening frame as they converted on the game’s first powerplay. The Mayhem then went on a powerplay of their own and CJ Hayes evened the score to send the game into the first intermission knotted up at one goal apiece. The second period started much like the first, but two goals form the Marksmen in a 19-second span put Macon squarely behind the 8 Ball. Later in the period, Fayetteville’s Vincenzo Renda stretched the Marksmen’s lead to four. Even with a powerplay chance in the back half, the Mayhem couldn’t find the back of the net and a scrap between David Nippard and Nick Mangone sent the teams into the locker rooms for the second intermission.

In the third, the Marksmen kept their foot on the gas defensively and limited the Mayhem’s scoring chances. Mangone put his name on the good side of the box score by netting the game’s final goal and putting the final nail in Macon’s coffin. The Mayhem fought like a team that had more than just 3 days behind them since their last game but ultimately were unable to mount a comeback attempt. The Mayhem will enjoy Turkey Day before coming back to the Macon Coliseum on Saturday, November 27th for Peanuts Night. The following afternoon they’ll be back in action for Pucks & PJ’s at the Centreplex, tickets and more information are available at maconmayhem.com.
