Mayhem end the weekend with a thrilling 7-6 victory over the Knoxville Ice Bears.
This game was action packed from the first puck drop. Jagger Williamson scored less than 90 seconds into the contest to give the Ice Bears a quick 1-0 lead. The Mayhem wasted no time responding with Garrett Hallford potting one less than 90 seconds later. Macon wasn’t done as just 10 seconds later Nate Keeley scored his first career goal to give the Mayhem the edge, but that was followed promptly by a Dean Balsamo goal that knotted the game up once more. Scoring cooled down for a bit before CJ Hayes and Hunter Bersani scored to end the period at 4-2 in favor of the Mayhem and forcing Knoxville to change goaltenders.
The 2nd period festivities began before the clock was counting down. The opening faceoff was interrupted by Justin Portillo and David Nippard getting booked on matching 2-minute minors before the puck dropped. The penalties kept plaguing Macon and Knoxville was able to capitalize bringing the game back to within a goal. Balsamo scored his second of the night before Caleb Cameron broke the tie and Tommy Munichiello added another to make it 6-4. Colton Fletcher scored Knoxville’s 5th goal of the night as he took a bone-crushing hit from David Nippard. The hit and the scrum that followed would leave Macon without the services of Nippard for the rest of the evening and Knoxville down both Fletcher and Portillo.
Tension remained high in the 3rd as the Mayhem were clinging to their one-goal advantage. Bersani gave them some breathing room with his second of the night before the Ice Bears were able to answer with one of their own. As the clock ticked down, Kristian Stead abandoned his crease and Knoxville attacked 6-on-5. Trevor Martin stood tall and made a couple world class saves to secure the victory for Macon.
The Mayhem will hit the road next weekend where they’ll see the Ice Bears two more times before closing out the weekend against Huntsville. They return to the Macon Coliseum on March 31st for Kids Takeover Night, tickets and more information are available at maconmayhem.com.
