Tom Aubrun Shuts Out Former Squad, Mayhem Lose 3-0

The Mayhem drop their second contest of the weekend in Roanoke 3-0.

Determined to not repeat the mistakes of last night, the Mayhem started this contest playing stout defense in front of Cody Karpinski who was turning aside every Roanoke chance he saw. The game stayed fairly even until the first Matt Stoia penalty of the night gave the Dawgs their first chance with a man advantage. While the Mayhem killed off the two minutes, it was only seconds later that Brady Heppner scored the game’s first goal. Macon was booked on two more minor penalties before the end of the period and while they were successful in both kills, all the momentum they built was stifled.

Going into the second, the Mayhem continued to look sturdy defensively until eight minutes into the period when they faced another penalty kill. Things went from bad to worse for the boys from Macon as another penalty put them on the wrong side of a 5-on-3 and Roanoke’s Matt O’Dea took advantage. The scoresheet was marred with more infractions before the period ended with the Mayem down two.

The third period brought more of the same. Good defense from the Mayhem was matched with a tremendous 40+ save night for the Macon goaltender. Tempers cooled after the previous periods saw some pushes and shoves with only a pair of Kyle Soper penalties on the period, one of which coming with only 11 seconds to play. Roanoke’s Mac Jansen netted the only goal of the period as the game closed with a 3-0 score, completing a bitter-sweet defeat for the Mayhem and their fans as they’re shut out by the former Macon netminder Tom Aubrun in his first start with the Dawgs since being traded.

The Mayhem will take next weekend off before they travel down to Pensacola on January 16th. The next time the Mayhem hit the Coliseum ice will be on January 22nd when they make up their postponed game against the Knoxville Ice Bears, followed by their make-up game with the Birmingham Bulls on February 5th. Tickets for those contests as well as more information are available at maocnmayhem.com.
