The Mayhem drop their second game in two nights as they can’t capitalize on their first goals of the season. The Pensacola Ice Flyers defeat the Macon Mayhem 5-3.
Two seconds into the Mayhem’s first away game of the season sparks flew as Tory McLean dropped the gloves and took on Pensacola’s Preston Kugler in a one-sided tilt that landed both men in the box. The two teams spent the next five minutes trading hits and shots until Macon’s Devin Brink got booked on a tripping call. The Mayhem kill off the infraction and remain perfect while shorthanded though the 2022-23 campaign. The game remained scoreless until, with a little over five minutes remaining in the first, Brandon Makara had time in the slot and slipped a shot by Cody Karpinski. A Troy Murray penalty and another Mayhem penalty kill brought the 1st period to a close.
The scoring opened up in a big way in the 2nd. Pensacola's Garrett Milan started the scoring frenzy early in the period. He was soon joined on the scoresheet by Caleb Cameron who netted Macon’s first goal of the season. Then the two teams traded goals as Ice Flyers defenseman Seth Ensor and Thomas Munichiello found the mesh. The last five minutes of the period were all Mayhem before a stumble by Connor Graham as he entered the defensive zone allowed Jay Powell to put the Ice Flyers up two goals heading into the final frame.
The 3rd period offered much of the same for both teams as the first five minutes included great chances but no points on the board. Nick Klishko scored his first in the Mayhem navy and red to bring his team to within one. The next seven minutes of play featured more Mayhem chances but ultimately it was Pensacola’s Colton Olynek who netted the game’s final goal, cementing the final of 5-3.
The Mayhem will take this next week to shake off a rocky first weekend then take the ice for a homestand against the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs. Tickets for both Friday and Saturday’s games can be found by visiting maconmayhem.com.
