Over the next 9 weeks we are going to be taking a look at the players who were released on our protected list for 2023-2024. This weekly series will be a reflection of who these players are, where they have come from, and what makes us excited to bring them back to Macon. Please help us welcome back #24 Sacha Roy.
Roy, a 24-year-old from Cookshire, QC, joined Macon after a trade with Knoxville that sent Rourke Russell to the Ice Bears. The Mayhem’s Defenseman came into the organization having played for Fayetteville and Knoxville in the early part of the season and bringing along with him 149 penalty minutes and after adding 96 more Sacha led the league in Penalty Minutes.
Despite being a young Defenseman Roy brought a lot of experience in the game to Macon. After beginning his playing career in Quebec Bantams and Midgets AAA Sacha was drafted 40th overall by the Cape Brenton Screaming Eagles in the QMJHL entry draft in 2015. During his 3 full seasons in the QMJHL two in Cape Brenton and his final year in Baie-Comeau Drakkar Roy appeared in 164 regular season games with 333 penalty minutes as well as 19 postseason games with an additional 20 minutes.
After the 2018-19 season in Baie-Comeau, Sacha moved onto the QJHL where he split the season between St-Gabriel-de-Brandon Predateurs and the Valleyfield Braves where he played 30 games before the shut down with 89 penalty minutes. When the shutdown came to an end Roy began playing in the LNAH for Riviere-du-Loup 3L and the Jonquiere Marquis before moving on to the Trois-Rivieres Cloutier of the LHSAAAQ.
Though the season bean for Roy in the LNAH, Peoria signed Sacha where he played for games and had 64 Penalty minutes before being loaned to the Fort Wayne Komets where he played 8 games in the ECHL. Following up on his first professional season, Sacha signed with Fayetteville where played just 2 games before being acquired by Knoxville and spending 24 games with the Ice Bears before finally arriving in Macon where he finished the season. During the season Roy was twice loaned back to the ECHL between Savannah and South Carolina for a total of 9 games.
With the selection to the protected list Sacha knows where he will be returning for 2023-2024 and the Mayhem have a solid physical defensive piece to continue to build around as they chase a championship.
Keep an eye out every Thursday for another look at one of our returning players!
The Mayhem will be heading back to the Macon Coliseum this year as they attempt to claim the President’s Cup. Season Tickets are on sale now by calling 478-803-1592 and guarantee yourself a spot today!
