Mayhem Prove Clutch in OT and Split the Weekend in Fayetteville, 3-2

Mayhem win their second overtime appearance in two weeks, this time defeating the Fayetteville Marksmen 3-2. After the heartbreaking loss the Mayhem suffered last night, they were looking to leave Fayetteville having taken at least two points from the Marksmen in the standings. That quest got out to a rocky start in the 1st as a goal from Connor Fries gave Fayetteville the first lead of the game. The Marksmen doubled their goal total 90 seconds later as Jarrett Kup netted his first of the year to put the Mayhem in a two-goal hole leaving the first. As this Macon team has proven all year, they are not ones to lie down. After a 1st period where they were heavily outshot, they started getting pucks toward the Fayetteville netminder. Mayhem captain Caleb Cameron led the charge on the comeback with two shots in the period. Those shots were the only shots in the period that mattered as they both got past Conor O’Brien to even up the contest before the end of the 2nd. Both teams battled hard in the 3rd but it was the goalies' time to shine. O’Brien and Macon goalie Michael Bullion stopped the combined 18 shots they faced to blank both sides. The Mayhem had a great chance on the powerplay late but the last couple of regulation saves from O’Brien sent the game into overtime. Scoring chances were hard to come back in the 3-on-3 overtime period as a Rhett Kingston one-timer was the best chance seen through the initial three minutes. The Macon momentum slowed as their first line was trapped in their d-zone. Fayetteville earned an offensive zone faceoff but a gorgeous Kyle Soper takeaway and subsequent breakaway left the puck in front of the net for Aaron Aragon to bang home. The Mayhem will look to keep the wins coming as they travel to Peoria next weekend to take on the Rivermen in a three-game series. Then, they return home to the Macon Coliseum for a three-game home stand where the team will celebrate; Country MOO-sic Night presented by Georgia Grown, Miracle Night benefitting the Beverly Knight Olsen Children’s Hospital, and finally Scout Night.
