Mayhem Fall Short During Mercer University Night

The Mayhem come up short in their second crack at the Rail Yard Dawgs, falling 6-2 in the finale of the back-to-back.

In the first, the Mayhem came out firing and with something to prove controlling the pace of play through the first two minutes of action. A bad bounce and a Brady Heppner finish put Macon down a goal early. They conceded another to the Rail Yard Dawgs before defenseman Bryan Etter sniped one past Austyn Roudebush to bring the Mayhem back to within one. The Dawgs wouldn’t go down easy as they score twice before the first intermission, putting Macon behind.

The old adage goes “There’s no lead worse than a 3-goal lead” and Macon came out in the second trying to prove that sentiment correct. After two successful penalty kills, the Mayhem played their best stretch of hockey all season as Josh Benson made an incredible diving save that translated into a beautiful Rourke Russell goal on the opposite side bringing the Mayhem back to within two. They kept the pressure on through the rest of the period but were unable to get another by Roudebush.

Roanoke regained their composure to start the third as the fans were treated to both of these teams at their best for the first five minutes. Macon continued to push the pace but a shot from CJ Valerian restored the Dawgs’ three-goal lead and they didn’t look back. Another Roanoke goal capped off the scoring for the night. A bit of referee confusion headlined the last five minutes as ended up with a 2-minute 5-on-4 powerplay that could have been a number of different combinations. The horn sounded without another mark on the scoresheet and the Mayhem ended the weekend with a loss.

The Mayhem take the ice again next weekend, November 3rd, in Knoxville and don’t return to the Macon Coliseum again until Thirst Thursday, November 17th when they host the Pensacola Ice Flyers starting at 7:30pm. Tickets for that contest as well as all Mayhem home games can be found at maconmayhem.com.
