The Mayhem drop a nailbiter in Pensacola 4-3. The Mayhem opened their third straight game in Pensacola showing a tremendous amount of urgency. The physicality from the last two contests remained but the defense patched up some holes, especially impressive considering the Macon d-core was five men deep after Timothy Faulkner’s late scrap last night saw him suspended. Pensacola’s Brendan Sheehan opened the scoring on a breakaway then the Ice Flyers put up two more, including a controversial buzzer-beater from Garrett Milan, to put the home team up three at the end of the 1st period.
Whether it was a reversal of fortunes or a motivating speech from Coach Niedert during the first intermission, the Mayhem came out firing in the second. Caleb Cameron netted his second in two games to put Macon on the board. Rhett Kingston was booked for a game misconduct penalty after rocking Pensacola’s Joey Sofo in open ice, leading to the Ice Flyers’ only goal in the second. The Mayhem remained undeterred. They answered with a Devin Brink knuckle-puck that connected with the goal mesh then Jake Goldowski scored his first in a Mayhem jersey.
In the 3rd, the Mayhem continued to hound the Ice Flyers’ zone. They were helped out midway through the final frame by a Malik Johnson high stick that put them up a man. Try as they might, however, they were unable to beat Pensacola goaltender Brad Arvanitis. As the seconds ticked away in the final minute, Cody Karpinski skated to the bench and the Mayhem entered the offensive zone with an extra attacker. Aaron Aragon had the only quality chance for Macon with the empty net but Arvanitis came up big one more time and the Mayhem were sent off with the loss. There’s more Mayhem action to come this weekend, and this time in front of the home fans! The Mayhem will be on the ice tomorrow at 4pm to take on the Knoxville Ice Bears as they host the Tighty Whitey Toss benefitting the Daybreak Resource Center in Macon.
