The Mayhem drop a close battle with the Marksmen 3-2 in Fayetteville.
Macon came out of the gates looking to pounce on a Fayetteville team that has had a rough go of it lately. Rhett Kingston struck first, scoring the game’s first goal past Fayetteville’s Conor O’Brien. The Mayhem’s newfound lead wasn’t one that would last long as just 30 seconds later Shane Bednard scored to even up the contest. After another 10 minutes of solid play from both sides, Austin Alger netted the go-ahead goal for the Marksmen to end the first. The Mayhem continued to push in the second and evened up the game off the stick of, once again, Rhett Kingston. After scoring his seventh goal in the last six games, Kingston and the rest of the Mayhem squad continued battling. They killed off two penalties and outshot the Marksmen, but Kingston’s was the only one that beat O’Brien. The 3rd period started with a couple of chances for the Mayhem with a man advantage. The Fayetteville penalty kill held strong and kept the Mayhem scoreless. Once the teams were back to even strength, it was the Marksmen’s turn to attack. Mayhem goalie Michael Bullion fought off everything thrown his way (38 total saves in the contest) before with less than a minute to play in regulation Brian Bowen snuck one by to give the Marksmen the win. The Mayhem will be looking for vengeance tomorrow night as they stay in Fayetteville to cap off this 2-game weekend series. They return to the Macon Coliseum on February 24th as the Mayhem celebrate County MOO-sic night presented by Georgia Grown. For more information and tickets visit maconmayhem.com.
