Mayhem drop their Saturday night battle with the Knoxville Ice Bears 5-3.
The tone for this game was set early as Troy Murray and Knoxville’s Rex Moe dropped the gloves not even two minutes into the contest. Tempers settled for the rest of the first as the boys got back to playing hockey. Cameron Hough and Rex Moe scored for the Ice Bears but a gorgeous short-handed goal from Rhett Kingston got the Mayhem in position to strike in the second.
Special teams ruled the second period as Knoxville struck first with a Brett Beauvais powerplay goal. Caleb Cameron answered with Macon’s second shorty of the night to bring the game back to within one. Then Justin McDonald etched another powerplay tally into the scoresheet and was answered by Colton Flecther with the only 5-on-5 goal scored in the period. The Mayhem surrendered a short-handed goal to the Ice Bears as Cole McKechney set the Macon deficit back at 2.
The Ice Bears entered shutdown mode in the third as their stout defensive play was too much for the Mayhem to overcome. The Mayhem pepper Kristian Stead with a season-high 39 shots but the Knoxville net-minder turned away enough to secure the win. The rough stuff came back towards the end of the game as Kyler Matthews shot a puck at Tom Aubrun after the final buzzer and he almost came to blows with Caleb Cameron at center ice.
The Mayhem hit the road this week as they travel to Fayetteville on Wednesday before they host the Marksmen next Saturday. Tickets and more information are available at maconmayhem.com.
