The Mayhem fight back from an early deficit to force overtime, but fall to the Ice Flyers in extra time.
The first period started with a mess of skates cutting into the ice at the Macon Coliseum as the two teams went back and forth for the first ten minutes. After a slew of opportunities, Pensacola was the first team to convert as Weiland Parrish and Griff Jeszka both found the back of the net to make it 2-0 Ice Flyers. These are not the Mayhem of old as CJ Hayes potted one on the powerplay to get the Mayhem back to a one-goal deficit before the 1st period closed.
Macon came out in the 2nd determined not to let Pensacola enter their end of the ice, and for the most part they were successful. The Mayhem blueliners kept the Ice Flyers at bay as Wyatt Trumbley scored his first goal of the season to bring the score back to even. Rourke Russell and Pensacola’s John DeRoche spent time in the penalty box late in the period, but the score stayed even at two.
In the third, it was more of a defensive showdown. Neither team was giving an inch in the defensive zone and tempers began to flare. Ice Flyers’ captain Garrett Milan played the role of heel, quickly making enemies of the middle Georgia natives packing the stands. After the last 20 minutes of regulation saw a variety of penalties but no goals, the fans were treated to some free hockey. Chances came and went for both squads, but it was Pensacola’s Tommy Stang who netted the game-winner.
The Mayhem will have another crack at it tomorrow night as they host the Knoxville Ice Bears at 6:30pm to conclude Military Appreciation Weekend. Ticket information as well as information on how to sponsor military personnel to the game can be found at maconmayhem.com.
