Mayhem Drop Weekend Finale to The Ice Bears, 5-3

The Mayhem fall in their final game of the weekend to the Knoxville Ice Bears 5-3. This Saturday night bout started off as a back-and-forth affair that saw the vast wealth of scoring chances belonging to the Mayhem. After a couple of stellar saves from Ice Bears goalie Julian Sime, the ice tilted in favor of Knoxville. Two quick goals from Cole McKechney and Carter Cowlthorp put the Mayhem down a pair. A Knoxville penalty gave the Mayhem the chance they needed and Jesse Anderson tipped a Ried Yochim shot to draw the game back to within a goal. The Mayhem entered the 2nd frame with a powerplay thanks to the characteristic antics of Ice Bear Ryan Devine at the end of the 1st. Nothing came of the opportunity as the teams continued to battle. Bailey Conger put the Bears up two then a Justin Portillo strike on the powerplay put the Mayhem in a three-goal hole. Ried Yochim bypassed the tip in front and just rifled it himself to bring the Mayhem to within two before the 2nd drew to a close.

The 3rd period saw the game go from a fast-paced offensive affair to a defensive slugfest with the officials receiving an earful from both sides. It started with Tommy Munichiello getting booked for interference and an additional 10 minutes for expressing his displeasure. Then David Nippard got sent to shower early when a spearing call ended his night. Kyle Soper ended up in the box shortly thereafter and Kyler Matthews gave the Bears their three-goal lead back with the man advantage. The Mayhem pulled Cody Karpinski with about three minutes to play and were able to net their third via TJ Sneath but ultimately came up short. The Mayhem will be on the road next weekend before returning to the Macon Coliseum for St. Hat-Trick's Day, tickets and more information are available at maconmayhem.com.
