The Mayhem flex some muscle but fall in their only contest of the weekend, losing to the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs 5-2.
It was a tough start for the Mayhem as Roanoke’s Mac Jansen but one past Josh Benson only 32 seconds into the 1st period of play. A slew of penalties followed but the only other note on the scoresheet was a Travis Broughman goal that put the Rail Yard Dawgs up by two heading into the second frame of action.
Roanoke picked up where they left off scoring their third of the night five minutes into the 2nd. The Mayhem bounced back in a big way with a Rourke Russel goal. The Mayhem weren’t done as Kyle Soper found a lane into the Roanoke zone and scored his first of the season in beautiful fashion. After another cluster of penalties, CJ Stubbs scored on the powerplay to put the Dawgs up 4-2 heading into the final 20 minutes of play.
The 3rd period started 4-on-4, certainly following the theme of the rough and rowdy gameplay, and it stayed quiet through the first few minutes. Billy Vizzo scored for the Dawgs to put them up 5-2. Another altercation midway through the final frame 26 minutes of penalties handed out between the two squads but that was the last event of note on the sheet until Jamie Dorsey picked up a penalty with two to play. The Mayhem finished the game with 37 shots on net, 1 more than their opponent. Common hockey law dictates that if you outshoot your opponent, you have a pretty good chance of victory. A great performance from Dawgs goalie Brody Claeys turned that law on its head.
The Mayhem will take the rest of the weekend off before playing three games at home next weekend. November 17th is Thirsty Thursday in the Macon Coliseum before the Mayhem celebrate Military Weekend. Military Night packages and all tickets can be found at maconmayhem.com.
