Mayhem drop their second in a row to the Pensacola Ice Flyers 5-2.
The Mayhem opened the 1st period having appeared to learn from their mistakes from Monday’s 7-1 loss. The defense for Macon was looking sharp through the first couple of
minutes with new addition Sacha Roy fitting in nicely and playing some solid minutes. Tonight’s contest also served as the Mayhem debut for Tucker Scantlebury and Jake Goldowski who both served in a limited role as they get acclimated to their new squad. The game stayed knotted at zeroes until Pensacola converted on the first powerplay goal of the game and Macon went into the first intermission down a goal. Both teams loosened up in the 2nd and the goals started flowing. Pensacola started the scoring before Devin Brink netted the first of the night for the Mayhem. Then the process repeated, Ice Flyers scored and the Mayhem answered. After Ried Yochim scored the second of the game for Macon, we saw the first scrap of the night involving a member of the Mayhem leadership. Caleb Cameron leveled a hit on Joey Sofo (who was a popular target of Macon's physicality) and answered for it. With Cameron in the box, Sofo got his revenge and made it 4-2 heading into the 3rd. Penalties continued to hurt the Mayhem in the third as Pensacola gained a 3-goal lead after another powerplay goal. Macon kept the pace high but to no avail as the goals just weren’t coming. The familiarity between the two teams hasn’t done any favors and tensions remained high. Sofo once again found himself in the fray as he sized up Wyatt Trumbley upon entry into the Mayhem zone. David Nippard held nothing back in his response to a rather unwilling Sofo, who ate a flurry of right hooks while trying to turtle into his shoulder pads. Newcoming Scantebury saw some extended playing time in the final frame on the powerplay but the Mayhem were unable to convert as the Mayhem fell 5-2. The Mayhem will have one more crack at the Ice Flyers tomorrow night in Pensacola tomorrow night before they return to the Macon Coliseum Sunday at 4pm to host the Knoxville Ice Bears. Sunday is also the Tighty Whitey Toss at the Coliseum where fans can make donations to Macon’s Daybreak Resource Center. For more information and tickets visit maconmayhem.com.
