The Macon Mayhem fall in a hard-fought battle with the Fayetteville Marksmen by a score of 3-2.
The scoring started early in this Friday night bought as Fayetteville’s Brian Bowen made it 1-0 less than a minute in to the contest. Feeling as though he hadn’t had enough, Bowen did it again four minutes later assisted again by his linemates Carlos Fornaris and Matt McNair. CJ Hayes cut the Mayhem deficit to one late in the period but Fornaris secured his third point of the night to make it 3-1 after the first. In the second, defense showed up and showed out for both sides. The Mayhem had a total of four 2-minute minors they had to kill off and did each with ease. They also had two chances on the powerplay but their good chances were fought off by Marksmen goaltender Brent Moran and the teams left the score how they’d found it. The third period shaped up much of the same. Both teams played great defense in the neutral zone, stifling all attempts to breach the blue line. This style was just fine by the Marksmen who still held their two-goal advantage, but the Mayhem needed to make something happen. That something came with just under two minutes to play defenseman Matt Stoia found Caleb Cameron for the one-timer. With the Mayhem down one, Tom Aubrun left his net empty and the Mayhem skated six. With about 30 seconds left on the clock, Macon was whistled for an icing on a play where Caleb Cameron may have been ahead of the Fayetteville back checker by a hair. Protesting from the Mayhem captain fell on deaf ears as the Marksmen killed clock and held on to win. The Mayhem will take the ice at the Macon Coliseum again tomorrow night as they host the Pensacola Ice Flyers on Teddy Bear Toss night. Fans are encouraged to bring stuffed animals to throw on the ice when the Mayhem score their first goal of the night. Tickets and more information on the Teddy Bear Toss are available at maconmayhem.com.
