Mayhem Blanked on Teddy Bear Toss Night

The Mayhem outshot their opponent for the second night in a row, but are without a win to show for it. Pensacola wins 2-0.

The first period was a great indicator of how the rest of the game would look. An incredibly fast-paced, back-and-forth contest that saw a lot of good quality scoring chances but some even better play between the pipes. Macon’s Josh Benson was the only brick wall to show cracks in the first as he got beat by Ice Flyers captain Garrett Milan on a 2-on-1 rush. The Mayhem managed some more chances but left the first period down 1-0. The second frame looked very similar to the first, both teams vying for looks at the opposing net-minder with little luck. Pensacola was able to capitalize again as Weiland Parrish snuck a puck past Benson on the powerplay. After that goal, Benson tightened up in the crease and the Mayhem began to turn the tides heading into the third.

The Mayhem held most of the momentum in the third period, using two separate powerplays to launch potent attacks. Unfortunately, Pensacola goaltender Henry Johnson was hell-bent on turning in a career performance and wasn’t going to be denied. Macon hit Johnson with 12 shots in the final frame and every single one was turned aside. After the final horn sounded, there still was a happy ending to the Saturday night affair. Teddy bears rained from the stands to the ice to be collected by the Mayhem players and distributed to the kids at the Beverly Knight Olsen Children’s Hospital. The Mayhem will take this week to regroup before they hit the Macon Coliseum ice next weekend, December 16th & 17th, to host the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs.
