Mayhem captain Caleb Cameron scores two in a tough 8-3 loss to the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs.
The Mayhem came out of the gates slightly on their heels and the first-place Dawgs took advantage early. Chris Vella netted the first goal of the game for Roanoke off the rebound of a nice Cody Karpinski save. Macon righted the ship but a couple of good scoring chances bore no fruit. There wasn’t another goal until about 12 minutes into the period when Nick Devito scored the goal that would give the Dawgs a two-goal lead heading into the break.
In the second, the Dawgs showed why they’re on top of the SPHL standings scoring four unanswered goals before Caleb Cameron potted his first of the night. Between goals three and four, Mayhem coach Nick Niedert decided that Karpinski’s night was through and decided to go with Josh Benson between the pipes the rest of the way. The only other note on the scoresheet in the second was a tilt between Kyle Soper and Sean Leonard after the Dawgs forward took a run at Cameron.
The Mayhem have consistently shown strong mental fortitude throughout this season and did again tonight in the third. Both teams scored a pair of goals, including the Macon captain scoring his second of the contest. While the game would end 8-3, the Mayhem may have suffered a greater loss than just a Friday night game. Late in the 3rd the Mayhem’s alternate captain and (tied) leading scorer David Nippard went down hard after a collision with teammate Tory McLean and did not return to the game.
The Mayhem will run it back against the Dawgs tomorrow night and won’t be back in the Macon Coliseum until January 22nd when they make up their contest with the Knoxville Ice Bears followed by the make-up game against Birmingham on February 5th.
