The Macon Mayhem lost a defensive slugfest to the Quad City Storm, 3-1. Though it was the first time these teams have met in over two seasons, the play immediately resembled rivals who had reached mid-season form. The physicality from both sides was immediately apparent as the goalies settled in. The only blemish for either goalkeeper in the first period was when Logan Nelson earned himself a breakaway and beat Cody Karpinski for the game’s first goal. The 2nd period was more of the same physical, defensive play. The Mayhem let the offense fly a bit more as a Troy Murray tripping call gave them a chance on the power play. The tables were soon turned when Wyatt Trumbey went to the box after getting booked on an interference minor. Neither team converted on their chance as the goalies were both perfect in the 2nd. Scoring broke open in the 3rd and final frame thanks to a Tommy Tsicos goal that was protested STRONGLY by Karpinski and his team. Tsicos had stormed the front of the net and made contact with Karpinski as he redirected the puck in. The Macon goalie’s case fell on deaf ears, the goal stood and the game went on. The Storm converted on a Reid Yochim double minor before Rhett Kingston scored the game’s final goal to send us into tomorrow with a 3-1 final.
The Mayhem will take on the Storm again tomorrow night at 6:30pm while they celebrate Miracle Night benefitting the Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital. Sunday will mark the end of the weekend series as the Mayhem host the Pensacola Ice Flyers at 4:00pm on Scout Night.
