The Mayhem defeat the Quad City Storm in a thrilling, back-and-forth battle 5-4. The Mayhem may have gotten caught playing by last night’s rules early in this one. After a rough Friday night contest, the officials tightened up play and the Mayhem paid the price. Cole Golka and Filip Virgili both converted on power play opportunities to give the Storm a 2-0 lead heading into the second frame.
In the 2nd, the Mayhem proved to be a different animal, one the Storm were not prepared to face. After Storm Captain Taylor Price made the game 3-0, the Mayhem had enough. Rhett Kingston started the scoring for the Mayhem and the ice tilted their way. In the very next series, Macon pelted Storm goalie Kevin Resop with shots but the puck miraculously stayed out of the net. The luck would run out on the Storm as Devin Brink tallied a successful powerplay chance for the home team to bring it to a one-goal deficit. Kingston found the back of the net for the second time (also tallying the Mayhem’s second power-play goal) to knot it up then Tucker Scantlebury finished the 2nd period scoring, putting the Mayhem up one.
Macon settled in defensively in the 3rd and turned aside all of Quad City’s early chances. Then a busted play in the Storm zone gave Rhett Kingston a chance alone with Resop, a chance that he wouldn’t waste. After the game paused so Kingston’s new hat collection could be carried into the dressing room, Davis Kirkendall scored to the Storm once again making it a one-goal affair. A late penalty gave the Storm a final power play chance but the Mayhem held strong and secured goalie Trevor Martin his first career SPHL win.
The Mayhem will keep the excitement going tomorrow afternoon as they host the Pensacola Ice Flyers for Scout Night at 4:00 pm. Tickets and more information are available at maconmayhem.com
