Benson Blanks the Marksmen in Macon’s First Win

The Mayhem get their first win of the season in resounding fashion as they shutout the Fayetteville Marksmen 4-0.

The Mayhem came out of the gates skating like it was going out of style. CJ Hayes scored the first Macon goal after only 2:11 had ticked off the clock in the first frame. Fayetteville’s Bryan Moore took an interference penalty (not his only mark on the sheet this evening) that resulted in a Macon powerplay. While the Mayhem weren’t able to score on the man advantage, Joey Sofo and Liam Blackburn scored three minutes apart giving Macon their first 3-goal lead of the season. As the period was drawing to a close a scrum below the redline in the Mayhem zone resulted in a game misconduct for Bryan Moore leaving the Marksmen with an empty spot on the bench for the remaining two periods.

Opening the second period, the Marksmen peppered Josh Benson with a flurry of scoring chances but the young netminder turned in the best goaltending performance Macon has seen all season. Even as the Mayhem spent 6 minutes of the second frame shorthanded, the man between the pipes didn’t falter and kept the 3-goal advantage intact.

Then it began to set in for both teams how this game was going to end. The third period was marked by some of the most complete two-way play the Mayhem have showcased this season and a helpless Fayetteville squad that was forced to watch a burgeoning team that finally had the wind at their backs. Another CJ Hayes goal put an exclamation point on the effort as he along with Josh Benson and 3-assist Rhett Kingston were the marquee acts in this North Carolinian drubbing.

The Mayhem will look to keep the good times rolling as they head into a one-game weekend where they’ll battle the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs on Friday, November 11th at 7:05pm. They return to the Macon Coliseum just in time for Thirsty Thursday, November 17th at 7:30pm, tickets can be found at www.maconmayhem.com.
